The Korean National Police Agency announced on the 31st that it will operate a voluntary reporting period for illegal weapons for one month, during which penalties will be waived for those who report them.
The voluntary reporting period is from April 1 to 30. The following items are subject to voluntary reporting: ▲ firearms and explosives (gunpowder, explosives, ammunition, shells, etc.) ▲ swords ▲ sprayers ▲ electronic shocking devices ▲ crossbows. If individuals are unable to submit illegal weapons during the reporting period due to unavoidable circumstances, they can contact the relevant police station to discuss submission methods.
If reported during the voluntary reporting period, penalties and administrative actions will be exempted in principle. However, if individuals manufacture, sell, or possess illegal weapons after the voluntary reporting period ends and are caught, they may face imprisonment of more than 3 years to less than 15 years or fines of 30 million won to 100 million won.
If the reporter wishes to retain possession of the weapons, they may go through verification procedures to check for disqualifying reasons based on the Firearm and Explosive Control Act to receive possession permits. Individuals or their representatives must visit the nearest police station, district office, or military unit operating a reporting station to submit illegal weapons.
The Korean National Police Agency is also distributing voluntary reporting posters in five languages: English, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Russian, encouraging foreigners to voluntarily report illegal weapons.
Last year, a total of 66,458 items, including 481 firearms and 63,930 rounds of ammunition, were collected as a result of voluntary reporting.
The Korean National Police Agency noted, "If individuals actively report illegal weapon possession, it can create a safer society."
