Gyeongbuk Gyeongju Wolsong Unit 2 and Gyeongbuk Uljin Hanul Units 1 and 2 have received a determination of adequacy in their safety assessments.
On the 24th, the Nuclear Safety And Security Commission held its 217th meeting and announced that it approved the safety enhancement measures derived from the second 'Periodic Safety Review (PSR)' results submitted by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for Wolsong Unit 2 and Hanul Units 1 and 2.
PSR is conducted every 10 years for all nuclear power plants in accordance with the Nuclear Safety Act. It consists of 14 evaluation items, utilizing accumulated operational experience to assess and find ways to enhance safety through comparative analysis with current technical standards.
Through this evaluation, Wolsong Unit 2 yielded six safety enhancement measures, including an earthquake vulnerability analysis reflecting current technology, and Hanul Units 1 and 2 produced seven items, such as improvements to the human factors evaluation system for human-system interface equipment. The Commission noted that it will continuously monitor KHNP's compliance status to ensure the implementation of these safety enhancement measures without setbacks.
Wolsong Unit 2 will reach its design life expiration in November 2026, Hanul Unit 1 in December 2027, and Hanul Unit 2 in December 2028.
