Lim Seung-kwan has been appointed the head of the Central Infectious Disease Hospital Establishment Promotion Team at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. He has treated infectious disease patients at tertiary hospitals and public hospitals, and is an expert in infectious disease policy who was on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, overseeing the response in Gyeonggi Province.
The new head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, born in 1974, graduated from Seoul Eonnam High School and Ajou University Medical School, where he also obtained a master's degree. He began as a clinical instructor in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Asan Medical Center, later serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and head of the Infection Control Center at Ajou University Hospital. After being the head of the Gyeonggi Province COVID-19 Emergency Response Team in 2018, he served as the president of Anseong Medical Center. Since last year, he has moved to the National Medical Center (NMC) to lead the establishment promotion team for the Central Infectious Disease Hospital, which is set to be completed by 2030 and will serve as the control tower for the medical response to infectious diseases.
The presidential office noted, “As a specialist in infectious diseases, he has accumulated expertise for a long time and has experience leading responses on the front lines during COVID-19,” adding that “he is expected to be the right person to support the government's efforts to protect the lives and safety of the people.”
