■The Korea Foundation for Women In Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET) announced on the 11th that it will operate the '2025 WISET Engineering Week' for female students in middle and high schools nationwide from the 12th to the 31st. The Engineering Week has been held annually since 2012 to encourage female students to explore and pursue careers in science and engineering fields. Programs on the theme 'Regional Science Expedition: Finding Hidden Science and Technology!' will be conducted at 10 universities nationwide, offering experiences, hands-on activities, special lectures, and mentoring related to promising future science and technology. Anyone who identifies as a female student can participate, and the participation fee is free.
■The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced on the 11th that a research team led by Professor Choi Jung-woo of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has won first place in the spatial semantics-based sound scene partitioning category at the 'IEEE DCASE Challenge 2025,' the world's top authority in sound detection and analysis competitions. Despite being their first participation, the team achieved world-class results after competing against 86 teams worldwide in total across 6 categories. Professor Choi noted, 'I am glad that our work, which has showcased the world’s best sound separation artificial intelligence models over the past three years, has been officially recognized.'
■The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) announced that researcher Jeong Ji-young has been selected as the recipient of the 18th Yeocheon Ecology Award. Established in 2005 to honor next-generation ecologists with outstanding research achievements in basic ecology, this is the first time a female scientist has received the award. Researcher Jeong is an expert in polar ecology and has conducted field investigations at the Arctic Dasan Science Station, as well as in Alaska, USA, and Cambridge Bay, Canada. The award ceremony will take place on the 17th at Hanyang University during the 80th regular academic conference of The Korean Association of Biological Sciences (KSS).
■The National Gwacheon Science Museum is hosting a 'Space Academy Lecture Series' in celebration of the summer vacation. This lecture series consists of three special topics covering key issues in space science, including Mars exploration, asteroid research, the search for external galaxies, and the development of Korean launch vehicles and satellites. It will be held three times on Saturdays from July 19 to August 9, each session starting at 7 p.m. and lasting for 120 minutes, at the 250-seat planetarium. Anyone aged 10 and over can participate, and reservations will be available on the museum's website starting at 10 a.m. on the 12th. The participation fee is 10,000 won per person.
