Roen Surgical announced on the 3rd that its self-developed world's first artificial intelligence (AI)-based kidney stone surgical robot "Zamenix" successfully completed its first surgery in Indonesia. Roen Surgical is a medical device company co-founded by Dong-Soo Kwon, an emeritus professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and his students.

According to the company, a total of seven surgeries were performed using Zamenix at the national hospital RSCM located in Jakarta, Indonesia, starting from the 18th of last month. The surgeries were led by Professor Ponco Birowo, a urology professor at the University of Indonesia and president of the Asian Urological Association, and Professor Widi Atmoko from Chimto Mangunkusumo Hospital.

All surgeries to remove large stones and multiple stones, as well as stones located in difficult-to-reach areas, were successfully completed without adverse reactions, and the patients' outcomes appear to be favorable. In the past, a patient with a 2.6 cm stone that required invasive surgery (PCNL) was able to safely remove the stone in a single surgery using Zamenix.

The success of the surgeries was presented by Professor Birowo at the international urology conference "JUMP 2025," held in Jakarta last week. Subsequently, Professor Sung-Yong Cho from Seoul National University Hospital introduced the AI-based surgical possibilities of Zamenix through a presentation titled "The evolving role of robotic ureteroscopy and artificial intelligence."

Professor Birowo, who performed the surgeries, noted, "Large stones and stones in difficult locations could be operated on precisely and safely through Zamenix," calling it "a very useful technology in the Indonesian healthcare environment."

Dong-Soo Kwon, CEO of Roen Surgical, stated, "We will expand clinical cases in Indonesia to prove our technological capabilities and concretize local hospital introductions, insurance negotiations, and marketing strategies," adding that "Zamenix will become the robotic standard for kidney stone surgery in the Southeast Asian market."
