President Lee Jae-myung has nominated Bae Gyeong-hun, head of LG AI (artificial intelligence) Research Institute, as the candidate for Minister of Science and ICT. Following Naver’s Hah Jung-woo as the chief of AI future planning, evaluations have emerged that he has demonstrated a commitment to an all-in approach to AI by appointing the heads of AI from private corporations in succession.
The candidate Bae, from Seoul, graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Kwangwoon University and obtained a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the same university’s graduate school. He then earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Columbia Southern in the U.S. and a doctorate in electrical engineering from Kwangwoon University. He also completed the AI strategy program at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Big Data Executive Program at Stanford University.
Candidate Bae is an engineer with a career developed solely in the industry. He started as a senior engineer at Samsung Thales, then worked as a senior researcher at SK Telecom’s Future Technology Institute, head of the AI platform at LG Uplus, and Director General of LG Science Park’s AI Promotion Team before taking the role of head of LG AI Research Institute in 2020.
As a full member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, he also served as chairperson of the Super-Advanced AI Promotion Council and the inaugural chairperson of the AI Policy Cooperation Committee of the Korea Software Industry Association (KOSA), actively engaging in external activities related to AI.
If candidate Bae, born in 1976, is appointed as Minister of Science and ICT, he will team up with Hah Jung-woo, born in 1977, as ‘leaders in their 40s’ in the field of science and technology. Like Hah, who emphasized Sovereign AI developed with Korea’s unique data and technology, candidate Bae has been highlighting the importance of Korean language model AI by leading the development of the indigenous open-source AI, ‘Exaone.’
