■The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) announced on the 20th that the national supercomputer No. 5, "NURION," is supporting experiments of the heavy ion accelerator "RAON" built by the Institute for Basic Science (IBS). RAON is a device that accelerates heavy ions and collides them with a target to generate new rare isotopes. KISTI and IBS joint researchers used NURION to verify the feasibility of planned experiments at RAON and conducted research to propose major experimental themes at RAON. The results were presented at the International Nuclear Physics Conference (INPC) held on May 27 at the Daejeon Convention Center.
■The Institute for Basic Science (IBS), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) of France, and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) will hold a "Korea-France Research Leadership Forum" on the 24th at Yonsei University's IBS Building. The forum was organized as a result of Korea's participation in "Horizon Europe," the world's largest multilateral research innovation program, becoming the first in Asia to do so in January this year. They will share CNRS's international cooperation strategies and examples of collaboration between Korea and France, and seek specific measures for expanding joint research and personnel exchanges. IBS Director Noh Do-young noted, "This will be an opportunity to envision the future of scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries ahead of the 140th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations next year."
■The Korean Intellectual Property Office held a "trademark policy meeting" on the 20th at 2 p.m. at the Korea Intellectual Property Center in Gangnam, Seoul, to support exports based on Hallyu (Korean Wave) corporations and trademarks. About 20 people attended the meeting, including officials from the Korean Intellectual Property Office and representatives from leading corporations in the K-food, beauty, and fashion sectors that are driving the popularity of Hallyu. Participants listened to challenges in the trademark acquisition process and discussed strategies for applying and protecting Hallyu trademarks. In addition to on-site communication with corporate representatives, they also discussed improvements to the expedited examination of Hallyu trademarks and strategies for preventing and responding to disputes for companies expanding overseas.
