Looking at the 25 brightest stars in the night sky of the southern and northern hemispheres, one can see that the stars twinkle in different colors. The color of a star varies according to its temperature, with blue being the hottest, followed in order by blue-white, white, yellow-white, yellow, orange, and red. These bright stars have been known by different names across various cultures. The brightest star, Sirius, means 'scorching' in Latin, the fifth brightest star, Vega, means 'falling' in Arabic, and Antares means 'rival of Mars' in Greek. Currently, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially organizes the names of these stars and standardizes constellations so that stars are called by the same criteria worldwide.
