This is a photo taken over the course of 17 hours last June of the night sky in South Africa. The Milky Way galaxy stretches diagonally along the lower left corner, while on the central right is the colorful Rho Ophiuchi nebula, and above it is the large red circular Zeta Ophiuchi nebula. Typically, the red color is emitted from nebulae that glow as hydrogen gas becomes excited, while the blue represents interstellar dust that selectively reflects the light of bright, young stars. Dark dust usually appears as a deep brown color. Many iconic celestial bodies are captured in this photo, including the bright star Antares, the globular cluster M4, and the Blue Horsehead nebula.
