The New Horizons spacecraft flew quickly past Pluto and its moon Charon in July 2015, capturing images with its camera. Based on the recorded images, digital restoration of Charon's surface has become possible. A video allowing viewers to experience Charon through a virtual flight has also been created using this data.
The journey over Charon begins in a wide canyon that crosses diverse terrains. This canyon is believed to have formed when Charon froze. It then turns northward and flies over a colorful depression known as "Mordor."
According to one hypothesis, this terrain could be a unique trace of ancient collisions. The New Horizons spacecraft is traveling too fast to return to Pluto and Charon. It is currently heading out of the solar system into deep space.
