The Nuclear Safety And Security Commission announced on the 2nd that the radiation dose for victims of the radiation exposure incident that occurred at Samsung Medical Center in January was within legal limits.
Earlier, on Jan. 2, a radiation exposure incident occurred in the linear accelerator treatment room at Samsung Medical Center. The hospital was unaware that the patient’s guardian was still in the linear accelerator room and activated the accelerator. The radiation therapists failed to realize this as the guardian remained in a changing room behind a curtain inside the treatment room while the accelerator was in operation.
According to the investigation by the Nuclear Safety And Security Commission, the effective dose of the victims was 0.12 mSv, which is within the limit for the general public (1 mSv per year).
Samsung Medical Center plans to install a switch linked to the entrance door of the treatment room inside the changing room to prevent recurrence and improve the system so that radiation therapists must check the changing room before operating the switch to leave the treatment room. The Nuclear Safety And Security Commission noted that it would continue to verify the hospital's action plans and implementation status for preventing recurrence.
