The Yumi Science Culture Foundation announced that it held the 11th Yumi Science Culture Award ceremony on the 30th at the auditorium on the 5th floor of the Korean Intellectual Property Office's Korea Knowledge Center building.
The Yumi Science Culture Award is given annually by the Yumi Science Culture Foundation to individuals or organizations that have contributed significantly to the promotion of science culture. The ceremony was attended by more than 40 dignitaries, including former Prime Minister Jeong Un-chan, former Seoul City Education Superintendent Cho Hee-ryun, Korean Intellectual Property Office Chief Judge Seo Eul-soo, Seoul National University Dean of the College of Humanities Noh Yoon-sun, former Creativity Foundation Chairman Jo Yul-rae, and Korea Basic Education Institute President Lee Jae-sung.
This year's Science Culture Award was presented to Professor Lee Jung-won of the University of Seoul, a renowned figure in the philosophy of science. Professor Lee has achieved outstanding research results in the fields of philosophy of science and history of science. He has researched ethical and social issues related to advanced science and technology, including NANO technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data, breaking down academic boundaries and opening new horizons. He has also made significant contributions to the social acceptance and value creation of science and technology. On that day, Professor Lee received a plaque and a cash prize of 30 million won.
The outstanding science book of the year was selected as "Unexpected Neuroscience" by Lisa Feldman Barrett, which explores the essence of humanity and social consolidation by integrating various disciplines centered around neuroscience. The foundation distributed it free of charge to over 1,000 high schools nationwide.
In the reading guidance award sector, which rewards reading activities between teachers and students, teacher Jeong Hyeong-sik from Hana High School received the Minister of Science and ICT Award, while teachers Heo Su-jin from Gyeongbuk Yeongdong High School and Shin Hyeon-sik from Chungnam Buyeo Middle School received the Korean Intellectual Property Office Commissioner Award.
