The government has established a concrete strategy to secure artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which has emerged as a game changer in the bio field.

On the 30th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the 42nd Biotechnology Policy Deliberation Council and reviewed and finalized the 'AI Bio Dissemination Strategy' and 'Implementation Strategy for Synthetic Biology Promotion.'

AI technology has emerged as a game changer in advanced bio research. Using AI reduces the time and expense of drug development, and personalized precision medicine has also become possible. Previously, experiments took a long time and required large-scale data analysis, but AI has eliminated these blind spots in the bio industry.

The government developed a specific strategy to secure core AI bio technologies and expand infrastructure. Through the integration of AI and robotics technology, it plans to automate the entire process of design, execution, and analysis of bio experiments, and respond to research demand in strategic areas such as bio and materials using the public bio-foundry and supercomputer No. 6. In the long term, it aims to build dedicated high-performance computing infrastructure for the bio field.

By 2035, it plans to link 10 million public and private data sets at the national bio data station and promote the development of high-value data sets and data standardization. It will also simplify the bio data distribution process (Ministry of Health and Welfare) and develop data anonymization technologies using AI and other personal data protection technologies (Personal Information Commission) to facilitate the use of bio data.

It will also foster professional personnel capable of utilizing AI technology in bio research and industry. Collaborative research based on multidisciplinary research teams in medicine, engineering, and AI will be supported.

Minister Yoo Sang-im noted, 'AI is a core technology that will accelerate innovation in bio research, which has historically consumed high costs over a long period. It is expected to open new possibilities across all areas of R&D, as well as the industry,' and added, 'We will ensure timely allocation of necessary budgets for securing AI bio technologies and creating ecosystems together with related ministries, and will also make thorough preparations for related legal and institutional arrangements and follow-up measures.'
