The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) announced on the 20th that 21 proposals were selected based on the evaluation results of the 2025 global TOP strategic research group support project.
A total of 77 proposals were received for the global TOP strategic research group support project, including 32 for the national strategy type and 45 for the future challenge type. The Ministry of Science and ICT and NST, together with 63 experts from academia and industry, conducted an evaluation of the proposals and selected 21 candidate topics.
The evaluation committee members who participated in the proposal evaluation noted, "The projects selected in this global TOP strategic research group proposal evaluation are not merely for research but aim for clear outcomes, which could lead to significant achievements that the public can feel five years from now." They added, "I hope that we can swiftly address national technology challenges centered on grants and create technologies that will surprise the world."
The Ministry of Science and ICT and NST plan to establish specific research and development plans based on the selected 21 proposals and to carry out follow-up procedures for in-depth evaluation and enhancement.
Kim Young-sik, chairman of NST, stated, "To lead the global technological hegemonic competition, we will operate an open research cooperation system centered on the global TOP strategic research group support project and actively pursue technology development that the nation strategically needs." He also noted, "We will create a healthy ecosystem where research and development and commercialization circulate positively by evaluating clear plans for utilizing research results."
