SPC Samlip announced on the 29th that it will cease production of 'KBO bread' and commence safety enhancement activities. This is a follow-up measure due to a recent fatal accident.

On this day, SPC Samlip notified on its website, “We will halt the production of KBO bread in consultation with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) and focus on safety enhancement activities and trust recovery.” SPC Samlip plans to stop KBO bread production starting from the 1st of next month after discussions with distributors regarding the related processes.

Earlier, on the 19th, a fatal accident occurred at the SPC Samlip Siheung plant, where a worker in their 50s, identified as A, was caught in a machine. SPC Samlip halted operations immediately after the accident, and plans to dismantle and dispose of the accident equipment once the investigation by relevant authorities is complete.

Additionally, through labor-management discussions, the company will reduce consecutive working hours and implement a pilot operation of a 4-shift 3-rotation system in some lines to improve work patterns. At the Siheung plant, operations will halt one day each week per production line, focusing that time on equipment inspections and safety enhancements.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, there were a total of 572 industrial accidents reported at SPC affiliates from 2020 to the first half of last year. Particularly, starting from an incident in October 2022, where a worker in their 20s at the Pyeongtaek SPL baking plant died after being caught in a sauce mixer (a device used for mixing or stirring solids, liquids, and gases), there have been three fatal accidents and five injury incidents in SPC affiliate factories over the past three years.
