On the 21st, the Korea Consumer Agency requested avoiding overlapping intake of diet health functional foods (functional foods) that are said to help reduce body fat due to risks such as liver toxicity.
The consumer agency stated that taking Garcinia Cambogia extract contained in diet functional foods alongside other functional foods with body fat reduction capabilities could lead to adverse cases such as liver toxicity. Earlier, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety also disclosed the results of a re-evaluation of Garcinia Cambogia extract with similar content in January.
However, many diet functional food products sold in the market appear not to properly indicate warnings regarding overlapping intake. A survey by the consumer agency of 12 products containing Garcinia Cambogia extract or green tea extract found that 10 products did not reflect relevant warnings.
There were also significant price differences among products using the same functional ingredient. The price difference per daily intake of Garcinia Cambogia extract products (based on product labeling) ranged from 170 to 921 won, a maximum of five times. Green tea extract products showed a price difference of 156 to 5,267 won, up to 34 times.
