Coupang's over-the-top (OTT) service, Coupang Play, will be available for free to not only existing Coupang Wow members but also general Coupang members starting next month, the company announced on the 9th.
A majority of content, including original content, domestic and international TV series, the latest movies and sports, family and kids' content, and real-time news, will be provided for free to general members, with advertisements being displayed during content viewing.
Video ads will be in various formats, such as pre-roll and mid-roll. They are designed to minimize disruption to the viewing flow and provide an immersive content experience, according to the company.
Benefits exclusive to existing Wow members will be further strengthened. 4K high-definition streaming and multi-channel audio support, previously offered for select content only, will be gradually expanded. Benefits like opportunities to attend live events and access to free latest films offered through the Wow member rewards program, Coupang Club, will also continue.
Meanwhile, for customers seeking a more in-depth content experience, a subscription-based optional add-on service called PASS will be introduced this year. PASS is a monthly subscription service offered to customers who want specific genres and content, including the latest movies, Japanese and Chinese dramas, and sports.
Initially, only Wow members can subscribe, with plans to extend the range to general members later on. A representative from Coupang Play noted, "Coupang Play, which has been beloved by Wow members, is now free for the entire nation to enjoy," adding, "We will continue to innovate in ways that break away from existing norms so that customers can enjoy diverse and excellent content in the most reasonable manner."
