The China-based e-commerce platform AliExpress (hereafter Ali) and Temu reportedly generated more than 4 trillion won in sales in the domestic market last year.

On the 11th, the app and retail analysis service WiseApp and Retail investigated the estimated payments of Ali and Temu, resulting in an estimated payment amount of 3.6897 trillion won for Ali in 2024. During the same period, the estimated payment amount for Temu was 600.2 billion won. The combined estimated payment amount reached 4.2899 trillion won. This figure represents an increase of 85% compared to the previous year, 2023.

As of December last year, the average payment amount per Korean who made payments on Ali and Temu was estimated to be 88,601 won and 72,770 won, respectively. Notably, when examining the gender of the payers, 73.1% of Ali payers were Namsung, while 26.9% were female. Conversely, Temu showed a similar payment distribution with 50.9% female and 49.1% Namsung.

Last month, according to WiseApp and Retail, the monthly active users (MAU) of Ali and Temu were approximately 9.124 million and 8.234 million, respectively. This survey estimated the amounts paid by individuals over the age of 20 using credit cards, debit cards, and bank transfers to the respective services, based on details indicated in consumers' payment statements. However, amounts paid via corporate cards, corporate account transfers, business-to-business transactions, and simple payments were not included.
