The government will establish a technology development 'testbed' to prevent the spread of fire damage occurring in buildings.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 29th that it will commence the development of 'fire spread prevention and evacuation and extinguishing performance enhancement technology for buildings' to develop fire spread prevention technology for finishing materials and build an integrated performance verification facility for evacuation facilities.
On the afternoon of the 30th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will hold a report meeting on the research and development project at the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA) with the project executing organizations, including the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), to review detailed project contents and implementation plans.
This project will be carried out with the participation of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Fire Agency, with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) serving as the lead research organization. Through this, the plan is to develop fire spread prevention technology, aiming for the demonstration operation of the integrated performance verification facility by 2029.
'The development of fire spread prevention and evacuation and extinguishing performance enhancement technology for buildings' consists of four key tasks. First, it will develop technology to enhance the fire safety performance of finishing materials. It will develop fire spread prevention technologies for ceiling insulation materials in underground parking lots and building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, as well as construction manuals and performance evaluation indicators.
It will also establish an integrated verification facility for evaluating the fire safety performance of evacuation facilities. To verify the effectiveness of evacuation facilities, such as alternative evacuation spaces, a damage safety performance evaluation system through simulation will be developed and an integrated verification facility capable of validating the performance will be established.
A platform for managing fire safety performance throughout the lifecycle will also be developed. It will create a fire safety performance history management platform for illegal construction materials and develop maintenance management technology for performance after construction for finishing materials and finishing systems.
It will also develop fire extinguishing equipment technology to prevent fire spread. Hybrid fireproofing and fire resistance systems will be developed by mixing external wall water curtain formation and sprinklers, as well as designing and developing structures for external wall detectors to prevent the vertical spread of fire in buildings.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to periodically check the results of research and development to ensure that the research outcomes in each field can be applied and disseminated to actual buildings.
