The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 4th that it will support green remodeling for 261 public buildings this year to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector.
The green remodeling project for public buildings aims to improve the energy performance of aging existing structures, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, and provide a comfortable living environment. Since 2020, it has been selecting the final support targets after a survey of desired buildings.
Until last year, a total of 3,470 green remodelings were supported, including ▲daycare centers (1,255), ▲health centers (1,330), ▲medical facilities (131), ▲libraries (38), and ▲senior centers (716). The total construction cost required for green remodeling was matched regionally. Public funding support was provided at 50% for Seoul and central administrative agencies, while 70% support was given to local governments outside of Seoul.
Starting this year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport expanded the eligible types of support to include buildings with high energy consumption in order to broaden the dissemination of green remodeling. Accordingly, other non-profit facilities, educational facilities, and public facilities were also included as targets.
Of the 261 buildings selected for green remodeling support this year, 42 (16.1%) are in the metropolitan area (including local governments and central administrative agencies), while 219 (83.9%) are in non-metropolitan areas.
By use, there are ▲senior centers (187, 71.6%) ▲health centers (37) ▲libraries (12) ▲other non-profit facilities such as senior, disabled, and children's welfare centers (15) ▲other educational facilities such as lifelong learning centers and women's centers (2) ▲other public facilities such as village halls (5) ▲other facilities such as youth centers and social welfare halls (3).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to promote six special projects applied by public institutions and local governments, which seek to serve as representative exemplary cases in the region based on high energy-saving effects and the introduction of innovative technologies. The signature project is intended to drive the regional spread of the green remodeling project and introduce advanced technologies with excellent effects to become a representative case of green remodeling in the area. The scale of support can be expanded up to twice that of the general support targets.
Hong Sung-jun, head of the Green Building Division of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "Green remodeling is a key means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from existing buildings by improving energy performance in the building sector. I hope this project contributes to achieving national greenhouse gas reduction targets in the building sector and enhances the capabilities of local industries participating in this project, prompting voluntary dissemination of green remodeling to the private sector."
