The number of victims of jeonse fraud recognized by the government has exceeded 30,000.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 1st that, after holding three meetings of the Jeonse Fraud Victim Support Committee last month, a total of 1,926 cases were reviewed and 860 were passed.
Among the 1,066 cases that were rejected, 624 were due to failure to meet requirements, and 246 were not recognized as victims because it was possible to fully recover the deposit through guarantees or priority compensation. The remaining 196 cases filed objections but were still dismissed due to unmet requirements.
As a result of this decision, a total of 30,400 individuals have been confirmed as victims of jeonse fraud since the special law came into effect on June 1, 2023.
Currently, 66.7% (30,400 cases) of the applications for recognition as jeonse fraud victims (45,550 cases) have been passed, while 17.5% (8,268 cases) have been rejected. The committee has made a total of 1,064 cases where emergency economic and public auction delays were decided.
The government is purchasing dwellings affected by jeonse fraud through the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and using them to support the housing of the victims.
As of the 21st of last month, LH reviewed a total of 11,733 requests for purchasing affected dwellings and deemed 4,156 cases possible for purchase. To date, 669 dwellings have been acquired, including 28 units that fall under non-compliant buildings but can be approved for use or have changed purpose, as stipulated in the amended 'Jeonse Fraud Victim Law' enacted last year.
A related official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport noted, 'Since the first case has emerged where non-compliant buildings can now be acquired after undergoing the normalization review, we will work to spread similar cases to local governments to ensure broad support for victims.'
