The redevelopment project of Baeksa Village in Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, known as the 'last dal-dongne' of Seoul, will be pursued after 16 years.

According to the Seoul city government on the 29th, the Baeksa Village redevelopment project involves developing the area around 30-3 Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, into a complex of 3,178 apartments across 26 buildings, ranging from 4 stories underground to 35 stories above ground.

After the redevelopment maintenance plan was confirmed through the integrated review committee for maintenance projects in Seoul in April, demolition began on the 8th of this month. With the designation as a redevelopment maintenance zone in 2009, the project has finally hit the right track after 16 years. Construction is expected to begin in the second half of this year, aiming for completion in the first half of 2029.

This village, located at the foot of Bulamsan mountain, which borders Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, was formed in the late 1960s when demolition victims of Seoul's downtown development collectively relocated to the area around the former address of San 104, thus earning the name Baeksa Village.

Unlike other relocation sites that transformed into apartment complexes through redevelopment in the 1990s, Baeksa Village remained undeveloped due to its designation as a 'development-restricted area.' However, the amendment of related laws in 2000 made it possible to lift the development restriction, paving the way for the Baeksa Village redevelopment project.

In 2009, the city designated the Baeksa Village area as a redevelopment maintenance zone to address aging and substandard housing. However, it faced repeated delays and made no progress. Ultimately, it was only this year, 16 years later, that the redevelopment maintenance plan was finalized.

The city conditionally approved a new maintenance plan for Baeksa Village during the integrated review of the maintenance project, unifying the division of sales and rental housing plots from the existing plan.

Kim Sung-bo, Deputy Mayor of Administrative Affairs of Seoul, said, 'I am grateful that the residents did not give up and trusted the city government through the many years of trial and error in the Baeksa Village redevelopment project,' adding, 'Thanks to that, we were able to create a plan for a nature-friendly residential complex that all residents desire.'
