On the 16th, the Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) and Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) announced that they have commenced substantial design work to improve the metropolitan transportation network in the Yongsan International Business District.
On the same day, the two agencies signed contracts for the basic and detailed design services for four newly established roads in the Yongsan International Business District, agreeing to proceed with the related work over 24 months.
The roads in question are: ▲East-West consolidation road (A-1) ▲Gangbyeonbuk-ro consolidation road (A-2) ▲North-South consolidation road (B-1) ▲Yongsan Station front to Baekbeom-ro consolidation road (B-2).
The new roads will connect the East-West axis of the northern region, which is severed by the Gyeongbu Line railroad, and enhance accessibility. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion on major nearby roads such as Gangbyeonbuk-ro, Hangang-daero, and Cheongpa-ro, thereby promoting local development.
Three consortiums will be responsible for the designs. The Taegjo Engineering consortium was selected for the East-West consolidation road (A-1), the Dongil Engineering consortium for the Gangbyeonbuk-ro consolidation road (A-2), and the Jeil Engineering consortium for both the North-South consolidation road (B-1) and the Yongsan Station front to Baekbeom-ro consolidation road (B-2).
SH Corporation adopted the technical proposal (TP) evaluation method to maximize the project's effectiveness and enhance design quality, allowing the use of the designers' technical skills and creativity.
The contractor will carry out comprehensive tasks such as investigation and analysis for the new road, as well as obtaining necessary approvals and conducting design work. Specialized designs will be introduced, including a multi-safety disaster prevention system for underground roads to secure underground space stability and a flood prediction and warning system in preparation for abnormal weather.
Hwang Sang-ha, president of SH Corporation, noted, "This project is an important starting point for the Yongsan International Business District to evolve into a center of an innovative urban transportation system," adding, "We will concentrate all of SH Corporation's capabilities to ensure the successful advancement of the project."
SH Corporation and KORAIL were designated as project executors in December after the designation of the urban development area and the establishment of a development plan in November last year. They plan to commence land preparation work, such as roads and parks, within the year. They aim to complete the design of the metropolitan transportation improvement project by the first half of 2027 and target road construction by the first half of 2031.
