Kumho Engineering & Construction held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Construction of Sewage Treatment Facilities' on the 6th (local time) in Takmao City, Kandal Province, Cambodia, it announced on the 8th.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in an empty lot in a small village on the outskirts of Takmao City, Kandal Province, was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, South Korean Ambassador to Cambodia Park Jeong-wook, Kumho Engineering & Construction President Cho Wan-seok, along with about 4,000 representatives from both countries and local residents.
A resident of Takmao City, Kandal Province, who attended the event said, "Thanks to Kumho Engineering & Construction from South Korea, the local sewage treatment facilities will be constructed, allowing us to avoid drinking contaminated water and escape from the stench," and added, "I had never thought this day would come. I am very grateful and happy."
This project is an overseas public infrastructure construction project supported by the Korea Export-Import Bank through the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF). The total construction cost is 115.7 billion won, with Kumho Engineering & Construction participating with 65% equity.
This project, being built in Takmao City, Kandal Province in southeastern Cambodia, includes ▲ one sewage treatment plant with a daily processing capacity of 12,000 tons ▲ a total of seven main pump stations and relay pump stations ▲ sewage and drainage pipelines totaling 130 kilometers ▲ and the construction of drainage facilities for approximately 10,000 households.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet noted, "Thanks to South Korea's excellent technology, Cambodia's infrastructure is improving, and national development is progressing well," and added, "This project will serve as a symbol of cooperation between the two countries and will be an important stepping stone for Cambodia's economic development."
This project is expected to be an important first step in solving the severe sewage treatment issues in Takmao City. The area has been using a combined sewage system where domestic sewage and rainwater are discharged together, leading to repeated overflow of mixed sewage and rainwater during the rainy season. As a result, foul odors and contaminated water have intruded into homes, causing significant inconvenience and suffering for residents.
When the project is completed in 2027, effective rainwater drainage during the rainy season is expected to be possible, and the introduction of a systematic sewage treatment system is anticipated to significantly improve the living environment and public health level across Takmao City.
Kumho Engineering & Construction has entered Cambodia since starting the 'Kralanh Ponley Dam Construction' in 2008 and has successfully carried out various infrastructure projects such as 'Kampot Bypass Road,' 'Siem Reap Sewage Treatment Plant,' and 'Mongkol Borey Dam.' They are currently also engaged in projects like 'Banteay Meanchey Irrigation Facility' and 'Climate Resilient Rural Infrastructure Development Project.'
Kumho Engineering & Construction President Cho Wan-seok said, "This project is an important undertaking to improve public health and the environment in the Takmao City area," adding, "Based on the construction experience and technology that Kumho Engineering & Construction has accumulated, we will execute it flawlessly to make it an exemplary case of international development."
