North Korea is additionally building a new 5,000-ton destroyer.
The Korean Central News Agency reported on the 22nd that employees at the Nampo Shipyard held a rally and resolved to build another new destroyer by Oct. 10, 2026. Every year, Oct. 10 is the anniversary of the founding of the Labor Party in North Korea.
Attending the rally held on the 21st were Party Secretary Cho Chun-ryong and workers and engineers from the institutional sector of the Nampo Shipyard. Nampo Shipyard Manager Yoon Chi-gul said in his report, "Let us demonstrate once again the boundless creativity and indomitable spirit of the honorable vanguard by successfully concluding the construction of the destroyer on time and upholding the Party Central's military construction plan."
The Central News Agency noted, "The enthusiastic momentum and passion of all participants, who will glorify the great Kim Jong Un era as a new period of strengthening naval power under the主体, resonated powerfully with the sound of the rallying cry."
North Korea revealed its first 5,000-ton new destroyer, 'Choi Hyun-ho,' on April 26. On May 21, a ship capsized during the launch ceremony for the second destroyer of the same class. After repairing the overturned ship on June 12, it was named 'Kang Gun-ho' and launched anew. Chairman Kim Jong Un mentioned during the Kang Gun-ho launch ceremony, "From next year, we will deploy two destroyers of the Choi Hyun class or higher to operational waters each year."
