President Lee Jae-myung appointed former Daejeon-Chungnam Regional Military Manpower Administration Head Hong So-young (60) as the Commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration on the 13th. She is the first female Commissioner since its establishment in 1970.
The new Administrator Hong was born in 1965 and is from Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. After graduating from Yeongbok Girls' High School and Korea University with a degree in biology, she began her public service career as a level 7 civil servant at the Military Manpower Administration in 1988.
Administrator Hong has served as the director of the Military Service Disclosure Division, the director of the Information Planning Division, the director of the Military Resources Bureau, and the head of the Daejeon-Chungnam Regional Military Manpower Administration. She was appointed as Administrator while on training before retirement.
She is the first internal Administrator in 20 years since Commissioner Yoon Gyu-hyuk in 2005. Previously, military generals have mostly been appointed as Commissioners. Administrator Hong is considered an expert in information and computer systems within the office.
Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung noted about Administrator Hong, “She has gone through various positions within the Military Manpower Administration, and her strong communication skills and proactive work approach are highly regarded, earning her great respect within the organization,” and added, “Being the first female Commissioner is not an absolute reason for her appointment.”
