The People Power Party decided to establish a dedicated organization to respond to the special investigation team that is currently investigating its members through searches and travel bans. The People Power Party is defining the special investigation as a 'political retaliation' of the Lee Jae-myung administration and plans to promote the 'Anti-Dictatorship Special Act.'
Song Eon-seok, chairperson of the People Power Party's emergency response committee and floor leader, said at an emergency general meeting held at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 9th, “As soon as the Lee Jae-myung administration, which claimed it would not engage in political retaliation, took office, it started wielding the knife of the special investigation team,” adding, “It has revealed its true nature of oppression of the opposition and political retaliation.”
He also criticized, saying, “On the official launch day of the Min Jung-ki special investigation team, the travel of lawmakers Kim Seon-kyo and former Minister Won Hee-ryong was banned,” and questioned, “How can travel bans be imposed without summons or investigation, which appears to be a clear abuse of power?”
Chairperson Song also stated, “A search was conducted at the office of lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun. This case is related to the searches conducted by prosecutors on our party's organizational department last November,” and added, “This is an act of humiliation against opposition lawmakers, as if to say 'let's just poke around.'”
The Min Jung-ki special investigation team, which is investigating allegations related to Kim Keon-hee, conducted searches at lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun's office and residence the previous day in connection with allegations of meddling in candidate nominations. Earlier, on the 2nd, they imposed travel bans on former Minister Won Hee-ryong and lawmaker Kim Seon-kyo in connection with allegations of stock manipulation involving SAMBU Construction and changes in the Yangpyeong Expressway route.
Chairperson Song noted that in response to the 'Special Act on Rebellion' proposed by Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Park Chan-dae, he would promote the legislative initiative for the 'Anti-Dictatorship Special Act.' The Anti-Dictatorship Special Act includes key provisions such as ▲ Limiting the President's granting of pardons and restorations of rights ▲ Prohibiting unlimited investigations by the special investigation team ▲ Prohibiting political pressure for resignation on heads of public institutions ▲ Blocking government subsidies to parties that have violated North Korean sanctions ▲ Continuing ongoing criminal trials of the President.
