The People Power Party decided to operate under a system in which floor leader Song Eon-seok concurrently serves as chairperson of the Emergency Response Committee. The newly formed committee will prepare for the party convention scheduled for August.
Floor leader Song met with reporters after a meeting of lawmakers at the National Assembly on the 30th and said, "Starting tomorrow (1st), I, as the floor leader, will temporarily take on the role of chairperson of the new Emergency Response Committee to establish the highest decision-making body."
He added, "Tomorrow, we will form the committee through the national committee and the standing national committee," explaining that "the Emergency Response Committee will effectively serve as the party's decision-making body temporarily until a new party leadership is determined at the convention."
Floor leader Song also noted, "There are constraints due to the short timeframe, so we cannot engage in many activities, but I expressed the intention that the committee should strive to become a decision-making body that allows our party to undergo a transformation and start anew," adding, "In fact, there were no opposing opinions."
Earlier, former chairperson Kim Yong-tae held a press conference to resign just 49 days after being appointed on the same morning. Kim argued for party renewal by presenting five major reform proposals immediately after the election defeat, but his efforts were thwarted by opposition from many lawmakers.
The Emergency Response Committee, led by floor leader Song, is referred to as a "management-type committee" and is preparing for the party convention scheduled for August. The convention will elect a new leadership. Current candidates for the party leadership include Han Dong-hoon, former representative; Kim Moon-soo, former presidential candidate; Na Kyung-won, and Ahn Cheol-soo.
