President Lee Jae-myung has nominated Kim Jeong-kwan, the head of Doosan Enerbility, as the candidate for Minister of the Ministry of Industry.
Candidate Kim was born in 1968 in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, and graduated from Gwangju Jeil High School and Seoul National University with a degree in economics.
After entering public service as part of the 36th national civil service exam, he served as the Director General for Comprehensive Policy and Policy Planning Officer at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. He has also served as a senior cooperation finance expert at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and held roles including Policy Planning Officer at the Bank of Korea. During his tenure at the Bank of Korea, he was recognized as a passionate bureaucrat, receiving the Special Advisor Award.
Candidate Kim left public service in 2018 to join Doosan Group, where he served as the head of the Doosan Business Research Institute and was responsible for marketing at Doosan Enerbility, a core subsidiary of Doosan Group (formerly Doosan Heavy Industries). He is currently the president of Doosan Enerbility.
The presidential office noted that he is "a key talent with economic bureaucrat capabilities and experience in the real economy," adding that he is "a candidate with expertise in industrial policy in general and also possesses execution capabilities."
However, when asked whether "Kim's nomination is related to nuclear policy," it was stated, "Kim's nomination is not related to nuclear power plants or the direction of energy policy." It was further added that "Candidate Kim will effectively implement President Lee's 'energy mix philosophy.'"
