The National Assembly extended the activity period of the special committee established on the 27th to investigate the tragedy involving a Jeju Air passenger plane that occurred at the end of last year from the end of this month to December 31 of this year to prepare support measures for victims and their families.
On this day, the National Assembly held a plenary session and presented the motion for extending the activity period of the special committee for the investigation into the 12.29 passenger plane disaster and compensation for victims and their families. All 170 attending members voted in favor, passing the motion under the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea. Members of the People Power Party boycotted the vote, claiming that the Speaker of the National Assembly, Woo Won-sik, and the ruling party were unilaterally pushing to process the election of the standing committee chair.
The special committee consists of 7 members from the People Power Party, 7 from the Democratic Party of Korea, and 1 from the Rebuilding Korea Party. The chairperson is Kwon Young-jin of the People Power Party, and the secretaries are Lee Soo-jin of the Democratic Party of Korea and Kim Eun-hye of the People Power Party. The special committee was launched in January and has been involved in activities such as proposing the special law for compensation and support for the victims of the 12.29 passenger plane disaster, which passed the National Assembly's plenary session.
The 12.29 passenger plane disaster is an incident that occurred after Jeju Air flight 2216 collided with a flock of birds and failed to lower its landing gear for unknown reasons, skidding off the runway at Muan International Airport. Of the 181 passengers aboard, 179 died in the incident.
