President Lee Jae-myung appointed Nam Dong-il as Vice Minister (Vice Minister level) of the Fair Trade Commission on the 26th. Nam, who has worked in key policy departments at the Fair Trade Commission, is regarded as a practical problem solver responsible for major policy tasks such as the enactment of platform laws and the adjustment of delivery commission reductions.
Nam became a public servant after passing the 2nd local government exam in 1997 and has worked continuously at the Fair Trade Commission. After serving as the head of the Corporations Division, the Manufacturing Industry Monitoring Division, and the Franchise Transaction Division, he led key policy departments as the director of the Competition Policy Bureau and the Consumer Policy Bureau.
In particular, during his tenure as director of the Competition Policy Bureau, he worked to protect small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners by pushing for the enactment of the 'Unified Dispute Resolution Law' for the swift resolution of fair trade disputes.
In addition to policy implementation, he has taken on various roles in organizational management and external communication, including serving as Spokesperson, head of the General Affairs Division, and Director for Planning and Finance. In 2023, he served as Secretary-General, and since January of this year, he has worked as a standing commissioner. He received high internal trust and ranked first in executive personnel evaluations.
The presidential office noted him as 'a representative policy expert of the Fair Trade Commission and a leader who promotes unity,' and stated that he is 'the right person to establish fair trade order suitable for the era of platform economy.'
Nam is expected to be responsible for leading major tasks, including the establishment of the 'Online Platform Law,' which is also a promise of President Lee, as well as overall platform competition policy.
