Lee Doo-hee (58·photo), who was appointed as the Vice Minister of National Defense, is evaluated as an operations and policy expert with a background as an artillery officer, having previously served as the commander of the Army Missile Strategic Command.
The new Vice Minister, who graduated from the Korea Army Academy in 1990 as a second lieutenant, served in the military for 34 years before retiring as a major general last year. With this appointment, a retired Army major general has now consecutively held the vice minister position after Kim Sun-ho, who served as acting Minister of National Defense.
After being promoted to general, the Vice Minister served as the Chief of Firepower at the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command, commander of the 28th Infantry Division, director general for policy planning at the Ministry of National Defense, commander of the 1st Corps, and deputy commander of the Ground Operations Command. He is known as an expert in artillery and firepower, having also served as an artillery battalion commander and an artillery regiment commander during his time at the field grade.
Kang Yoo-jung, the spokesperson for the presidential office, noted that he is a person with "gentle leadership and communication skills, and is highly evaluated for his ability to successfully carry out defense innovation that incorporates advanced science and technology."
