President Lee Jae-myung said on the 24th regarding the late former lawmaker Yoo Seong-yup, who passed away, "He devoted his life as a public servant, administrator, and politician for the region and the country," adding, "I express my deep sorrow and condolences at the news of his passing."
President Lee expressed his condolences in a statement titled "I extend my condolences on the passing of a long-time comrade" this morning, stating, "The dedication and passion of the deceased, who cared for the future of the country until the last moment, will forever live in our hearts," and added, "I offer my sincere words of comfort to the bereaved family. I pray for the peaceful rest and eternal slumber of the deceased."
Yoo, a politician from Jeongeup, Jeonbuk, served as a lawmaker in the 18th to 20th National Assemblies. He collapsed from a stroke while campaigning in May of this year in Jinang-gun, Jeonbuk, and passed away during his battle with illness. He passed the civil service examination in 1983 and held positions such as the Director of the Culture and Tourism Bureau and the Director of the Economic and Trade Bureau in Jeonbuk.
In 2015, he followed Ahn Cheol-soo's departure from the Democratic Party of Korea, which led him to leave the party as well. He successfully served a third term in the April 2016 general election under the banner of the People's Party. He was active as a commissioner on the Agricultural, Food and Rural Affairs Committee in the early session of the 18th National Assembly, and later served as the opposition secretary on the Agricultural and Fisheries Committee in the 19th National Assembly after going through committees on education and science, and future creation, science and broadcasting communications.
He passed through the Democratic Peace Party and the Minjung Party to run in the 21st general election but was not elected, and in December 2021, he rejoined the Democratic Party of Korea and continued his political activities in the region.
