The ruling and opposition parties agreed to hold a National Assembly plenary session on the 26th for the formation of a supplementary budget. Discussions on the formation of the National Assembly committees, including the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and the Special Committee on Budget & Accounts, are expected to conclude soon.
Kim Byeong-ki, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Song Eon-seok, the floor leader of the People Power Party, met that day in the National Assembly under the chairmanship of Woo Won-sik, the Speaker of the National Assembly. The two parties discussed current issues, including the agenda for the plenary session, the composition of standing committee chairs, and the supplementary budget.
Kim Hyun-jeong, the Democratic Party's spokesperson, met with reporters after the meeting and said, "Only the supplementary budget address and the resolution to commemorate former Congressman Charles Rangel will proceed." Park Seong-hoon, the People Power Party's spokesperson, also responded to a question about whether an agreement had been reached on the plenary session schedule on the 26th, saying, "For now, that seems to be the case."
The decision to adopt a resolution of commemoration was made for former Congressman Rangel, a pro-Korea American politician who was a veteran of the Korean War and recently passed away.
Speaker Woo requested that the list of members for the Special Committee on Budget & Accounts, which is reviewing the supplementary budget submitted by the government, be submitted by the 26th. He also urged discussions on reaching an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties regarding the allocation of 5 standing committee chairs that remain vacant, as well as the composition of the Special Committee on Ethics and the extension of the activity period for the Special Committee on Aviation Disasters.
In his opening remarks, Woo said, "The supplementary budget proposal and the personnel agenda for the Prime Minister have come to the National Assembly," adding, "Though there may be differences in positions between the ruling and opposition parties, it is necessary to seriously discuss how to alleviate the concerns of the public and stabilize the country."
Floor leader Kim Byeong-ki stated, "The livelihood of the public is now on the brink," stressing that "the prompt processing of the supplementary budget is very important to match the appropriate timing." Floor leader Song Eon-seok remarked, "As the second-largest party in the National Assembly and the opposition party, I once again request that (the People Power Party) reallocate the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee."
