On the 18th, the National Planning and Coordination Committee stated that it would discuss plans to cultivate talent in artificial intelligence (AI) that can address all stages of education in the future.
On the same day, the National Planning and Coordination Committee received a report on its work from the Ministry of Education at the Government Sejong Convention Center and announced that there was a consensus between the Social Subcommittee members and the Ministry of Education on the need to activate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education from primary and secondary education regarding AI education direction.
It further explained that regarding the promise to create 10 Seoul National Universities, it is important to strengthen the capabilities of national universities, and it decided to discuss plans to establish a virtuous cycle that allows education, employment, entrepreneurship, and settlement to be done regionally, considering balanced regional development.
On the same day, through a report from the Fire Agency, the National Planning and Coordination Committee expressed the need to prepare a response strategy against climate crises at the Fire Agency level, enhance research and development (R&D) to modernize firefighting equipment, advance the 119 system using AI, ensure the smooth opening of the National Fire Hospital, and requested protection for overseas citizens.
It stated that regarding the recent large forest fire in the Yeongnam region, there is a need for adjustment in the command system between the Fire Agency and the Korea Forest Service.
The Fire Agency reported to the National Planning and Coordination Committee that large-scale and complex disasters, which are difficult for local governments to manage due to climate change, are continuously occurring, and that the state's responsibilities and roles in disaster response need to be strengthened.
On the same day, Lee Han-joo, the Commissioner of the National Planning and Coordination Committee, noted while receiving a report on the work from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups that the understanding and fulfillment of promises have decreased compared to when the government of Moon Jae-in was launched in 2017.
