The Korea Accreditation Board (KAB) announced on the 16th that it has formally introduced an accreditation and certification system for artificial intelligence management systems in accordance with international standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The artificial intelligence management system is an international standard that contains the requirements and procedures that corporations developing or utilizing artificial intelligence-related products or services must comply with. The ISO officially established this standard in 2023, and the National Institute of Technology and Standards plans to formalize it as a national standard (KS) in the latter half of this year.

KAB introduced the accreditation system for artificial intelligence management systems in June of last year, and after one year of pilot operation, it has officially adopted this system.

Park Jin-seo, CEO of KAB, noted, "We have officially introduced the accreditation system for artificial intelligence management systems to actively respond to the spread of AI management systems and the certification demand of corporations,” adding that it is the first of its kind introduced in Asia.

According to KAB, the importance of institutional foundations is growing due to the rapid spread of artificial intelligence. Related laws are being enacted domestically and internationally, and organizations like ISO are developing international standards. Corporations are being required to establish related systems to enhance the reliability of artificial intelligence and to manage risks.

Park emphasized, "Artificial intelligence management systems are a powerful means to actively respond to rapidly changing AI technologies and environments, and I expect that it will become a key international standard that must be complied with for entering overseas markets in the future."

Meanwhile, KAB, established in 1995, has been designated the only "management system accreditation body" in Korea by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy under the Act on the Management of Conformity Assessment. It currently provides accreditation and certification in 19 areas, including quality, environment, safety and health, and nuclear supply chains.
