President Lee Jae-myung said on the 15th, “To ease military tensions and create a peaceful atmosphere, we will promptly restore the suspended inter-Korean dialogue channels and rebuild the crisis management system.”
On this day, President Lee Jae-myung wrote on Facebook, “The Lee Jae-myung administration will put an end to wasteful hostile acts and resume dialogue and cooperation” to mark the 25th anniversary of the June 15 inter-Korean joint declaration.
President Lee said, “On June 15, 2000, for the first time since the division in 1945, the leaders of the North and South faced each other and announced the June 15 inter-Korean joint declaration,” adding, “It was the starting point for breaking down the walls of confrontation and distrust that have lasted for over half a century and opening a new era of reconciliation and cooperation.”
He then added, “It brought a spirit of peace to the Korean Peninsula and showed the possibility that the North and South can prosper together.”
President Lee stated, “In recent years, the Korean Peninsula is regressing to the cold times of the past,” and expressed “deep concern over the situation where dialogue and exchanges between the North and South have ceased and tensions and anxieties in the border areas have intensified.”
He continued, “We have learned through history that when peace is shaken, not only the economy and security but also the daily lives of the people are threatened,” asserting, “The saying that peace is economic is by no means an exaggeration.”
President Lee said, “We must remember the promise made 25 years ago today and regain the lost time and the vanished peace,” adding, “We need to transform the Korean Peninsula risk into a Korean Peninsula premium and open a future where both the North and South can thrive together.”
