Spokesperson Kang noted, “Although the government has made its position clear regarding the distribution of leaflets to North Korea, it recognizes the situation seriously for violating this policy” and added, “We will take strict measures against the private organizations and individuals involved in the distribution today depending on whether they violated relevant laws.”

The Lee Jae-myung administration has expressed the position that illegal distribution of leaflets to North Korea, which threatens the daily lives and safety of residents in border regions and can escalate military tension on the Korean Peninsula, must be halted.

During the Cabinet meeting on the 10th, President Lee Jae-myung directed that under consultations with related ministries, specific countermeasures including punishment should be prepared according to the violation of laws such as the Aviation Safety Act, Disaster and Safety Act, and High-Pressure Gas Safety Act regarding the distribution of leaflets to North Korea.

At a meeting with residents in border areas the day before, it was also promised, “The Ministry of Unification requested to refrain from illegal distribution of leaflets to North Korea, and if this is violated and continues, punishment should be imposed.”
