On the 12th, "three-term" People Power Party Representative Song Eon-seok (Gyeongbuk Gimcheon) declared his candidacy for the party’s floor leader, saying, "I will fight with policy and win with unity."
On that day at 10 a.m. in the National Assembly’s communication hall, Representative Song held a press conference and officially announced his candidacy for floor leader, stating, "I will dedicate myself solely to the people and the party to solve the severe economic situation and the suffering of the people caused by livelihood issues and to overcome the confusion within the party."
He noted, "We have lost the government that the people entrusted to us. After going through the sudden martial law and the impeachment of the president, despite intense struggles, we have ultimately faced the bitter defeat in the presidential election. And now, the populism and legislative overreach of the Democratic Party of Korea are beginning in earnest," and added, "Now, the people are demanding clear change and true renewal from our People Power Party."
Representative Song commented, "The people no longer want a politics weary from conflict and intrigue. Furthermore, I hope that the People Power Party can re-emerge as a party strong in policy, presenting solutions for livelihood and the economy."
He further stated, "Based on the policy expertise in the economic and fiscal sectors I have developed throughout my life, I will serve as a solid foundation to lead the party's change and renewal."
While doing so, he proposed commitments such as ▲ seeking renewal directions through continuous listening conferences with the people ▲ establishing a Shadow Cabinet to monitor the Lee Jae-myung administration and suggest alternatives ▲ promoting a "May 1st coalition front" with other parties, organizations, and academia.
Representative Song, a former second vice minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, successfully achieved three terms in a row after entering office through a by-election in 2018, representing Gyeongbuk Gimcheon. He has served as the party's floor leader and the chair of the National Assembly's Planning and Finance Committee.
