Representative Jeong Cheong-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea officially announced on the 12th that he would step down from his position as chairman of the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee.

On this day, Rep. Jeong posted on Facebook with the title “resign from the judiciary committee chairmanship,” stating, “Having completed my term, I will step down.”

He noted, “I have completed my duties as chairman of the judiciary committee without significant issues,” and expressed gratitude, saying, “I thank all the citizens who supported me during my tenure.”

He further emphasized, “Wherever I am, I will always be faithful to my duties as if it were the beginning,” adding, “For the success of the Lee Jae-myung administration, I will work harder, with greater humility, alongside the people, party members, and supporters.”

With this resignation, Rep. Jeong is expected to compete for the next party leader position alongside acting party leader and floor leader Park Chan-dae.

Acting leader Park also held a farewell press conference on this day, revealing, “I am considering running for the party leadership election.”

Since being elected as floor leader in May of last year with the support of pro-Lee Jae-myung factions, acting leader Park has spearheaded major political issues such as the declaration of martial law, presidential impeachment, and regime change under former President Yoon Seok-yeol.

On the 13th, a new floor leader for the Democratic Party is scheduled to be elected. Representatives Kim Byung-ki and Seo Young-kyo are running as candidates.

Both candidates have strongly opposed the People Power Party's demand for the 'replacement of the judiciary committee chairman.' Accordingly, the Democratic Party is expected to continue holding the position for the time being.
