A theory on the dissolution of the People Power Party is emerging in the political arena, which opposed the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. The Democratic Party of Korea has introduced a bill to amend the Political Party Act, stating that if a president, who is a party member, is dismissed for insurrection or treason and the sentence is confirmed, the government will seek a review for the dissolution of the political party, and that procedures will commence concurrently with a special investigation.
Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Park Hong-keun noted on Facebook on the 11th, "The People Power Party, which disregards the constitution, turns its back on public opinion, and deviates far from common sense, is rushing to its own dissolution in court" and added, "Angry citizens have already started a petition with 10 million signatures to dissolve the People Power Party."
He emphasized, "Still, a majority of People Power Party lawmakers oppose even the invalidation of the party position against Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment. This means they will not only reflect but also acknowledge the unconstitutional and illegal actions of Yoon Suk-yeol, who was the 'No. 1 party member,' and those who defended such wrongdoings" and stated, "In the end, the National Assembly should pass the amendment to the Political Party Act and proceed with dissolution according to the demands of the sovereign and legal procedures."
Park stated that in March, he proposed an amendment to the Political Party Act that would prevent a political party from running candidates in the next election if the president affiliated with that party is confirmed to have committed insurrection or treason. If the law is passed and former President Yoon receives a confirmed sentence on the charge of being a 'leader of the insurrection', the People Power Party could be subject to a review for dissolution.
Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo is also expecting that the Democratic Party will move to dissolve the People Power Party while conducting a special investigation into the three major cases (insurrection, Kim Keon-hee, and Chae Hae-byeong). Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Dong-ah is also scheduled to hold a press conference at the National Assembly on this day, urging the dissolution of the insurrectionary party, the People Power Party.
On the same day, Hong posted on Facebook, "I had already publicly warned the People Power Party lawmakers about impeachment 40 days before the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol, when 16 of them gathered," and added, "Saying ignorance is bliss applies at times like this. It seems the Lee Jae-myung administration will start the dissolution process for the political party after the special investigation concludes, so prepare for self-preservation."
