On the 11th, Kim Yong-tae, Chairperson of the People Power Party's emergency response committee, conveyed an appeal to all People Power Party members to agree to the nullification of the party's anti-impeachment stance, which is one of his proposed reform plans.
Chairperson Kim noted in the appeal that "the People Power Party adopted an anti-impeachment stance on two impeachment motions tabled by the Democratic Party of Korea, based on the principle of ‘determining impeachment based on official investigation results.'"
He continued, "On Apr. 4, the Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment against President Yoon Seok-yeol, and the People Power Party was defeated in the early presidential election. The reason I am now pushing for the nullification of the anti-impeachment stance is that the conservative party remains caught in severe conflict and deep resentment due to the two impeachments."
He added, "The recent presidential primary was also a battle of emotions between pro-impeachment and anti-impeachment. Without resolving this issue, the upcoming party convention, which conservatism must hold, will just be another heated debate on impeachment. For conservatives unable to cross the impeachment river, there is no coexistence or unity, and without lifting opposition into creative energy, we have no future."
He stated, "Now, we must untie the knot of conflict and wounds caused by impeachment and let's be tolerant of both the supporting and opposing positions on impeachment."
Chairperson Kim added, "Each lawmaker’s interpretation and judgment as a constitutional institution should be respected. Opposition to impeachment did not equate to support for martial law. However, decisions like those of the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court become irreversible grounds to determine or revise the party's stance in a liberal democratic party."
He emphasized that "if the People Power Party gathers consensus to move beyond the impeachment river, the upcoming party convention will mark the start of a rebuilt conservatism as a strong alternative to the Lee Jae-myung administration, which destroys the rule of law."
Concluding the appeal, he earnestly requested, "In this regard, I sincerely ask senior colleague lawmakers to cross the impeachment river and achieve true unity of the party by agreeing to the nullification of the anti-impeachment stance."
