The People Power Party will hold a general meeting on the 9th to discuss leadership changes and party reform plans following its defeat in the 21st presidential election. It is expected that Kim Yong-tae, the chairperson of the emergency response committee, will also determine his fate on this day.
The People Power Party conducted a general meeting for about five hours from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. However, they were unable to reach a conclusion on the party reform plan and leadership change, deciding to hold another general meeting on the 9th to continue the discussion.
During the general meeting, heated discussions especially arose over Chairperson Kim's future. Park Hyung-soo, the floor leader, noted, “There were opinions that the chairperson should resign after addressing the innovation tasks and that the entire leadership should resign as a whole.” He added that the majority opinion was that Chairperson Kim should resign.
Earlier, Floor Leader Kwon and the floor leadership, along with committee members, had expressed their collective intention to resign, but Chairperson Kim stated that he would reserve his position and listen more attentively to opinions within the party before making a decision. Former chairperson Kwon Young-se and Floor Leader Kwon are reported to have demanded Kim's resignation.
In response, Deputy Floor Leader Park stated, “There were opinions in the general meeting that the chairperson should resign, but that cannot be seen as pressure,” adding, “It’s up to the individual to determine whether it is pressure.”
They will also begin the election schedule to elect the next floor leader. The People Power Party plans to hold an emergency committee meeting and announce the election notice for the floor leader today.
