Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea’s presidential candidate, noted on the 29th, "The United States Forces Korea play a very important role in the U.S.'s China containment policy." This appears to emphasize the strategic significance of the USFK. However, when asked how he would respond if China were to invade Taiwan, he avoided a direct answer, saying, "I'll think about it when aliens try to invade Earth."

In an interview published that day with Time Magazine, Lee made these comments. This drew a line against concerns that Korea could be sidelined in the U.S.-North Korea dialogue after U.S. President Donald Trump recently hinted at re-engaging in negotiations with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un.

Lee stated, "I understand that U.S. President Donald Trump is looking forward to dialogue with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un," adding that "this will contribute to peace not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in Northeast Asia."

He continued, "Even if the U.S. and North Korea engage in direct talks, issues related to economic cooperation or aid may still arise, so structurally, it will not be easy to exclude the Korean government."

Regarding the improved relations between the U.S. and Russia, he highlighted this as "a means to pressure China," predicting that it could potentially benefit Korea in future endeavors like the opening of the Arctic route.

On Korea’s self-nuclear armament theory, Lee voiced his opposition, stating, "It will trigger a 'domino effect' with other countries, including Japan, successively acquiring nuclear weapons."

However, when asked how he would respond if China were to invade Taiwan, he evaded the question, stating, "I'll think about it when aliens try to invade Earth."

Time Magazine explained regarding Lee, "Lee was previously known for a pro-China inclination, but during election campaigns, he toned it down targeting moderate voters. He expressed positive views regarding the U.S. and the South Korea-U.S. alliance during the campaign."

Regarding Japan-South Korea relations, Lee noted, "We cannot dwell on the past," yet pointed out, "Japan continuously denies history and fails to sincerely apologize, causing pain to Koreans."

Meanwhile, regarding President Trump, Lee remarked, "He has excellent negotiating and bargaining skills and acts for the benefit of the American people," while adding, "I, too, must strive for a better life for South Korean citizens and the national interest."
