Kim Moon-soo, the People Power Party presidential candidate, visited the Korean National Council of Senior Citizens on the 19th and shared his opinions on senior welfare pledges and low birth rate measures.
During a meeting held at the Korean National Council of Senior Citizens in Jung-gu, Seoul, Kim said, “I deeply respect Chairman Lee Jung-geun of the Korean National Council of Senior Citizens, who has a special patriotism,” adding, “I was greatly impressed by his bold commitment to offer 100 million won for encouraging more births.” Previously, Lee Jung-geun, chairman of the Korean National Council of Senior Citizens and Booyoung Group, drew attention by announcing that he would provide 100 million won to employees who give birth to one child.
Kim remarked, “This is exactly what I wanted to do,” and noted, “I suggested that the People Power Party’s policy chair, Kim Sang-hoon, review the policy of giving 100 million won for each baby born.”
He continued, “Chairman Kim said, ‘If we have about 25 trillion won a year, I think we can do it,’” adding, “We need to thoroughly review whether maintaining 25 trillion won is appropriate or if something different is needed. We should make it so that young people are excited, just like what this chairman is doing.”
Lee Jung-geun, chairman of the Korean National Council of Senior Citizens, requested the reassignment of 'United Nations Day' as a holiday. United Nations Day was established to commemorate the founding of the United Nations (UN) on Oct. 24, 1945. It was observed as a holiday until 1975, but the designation was abolished in 1976 in protest after North Korea officially joined some UN agencies.
Chairman Lee proposed, “Let’s firmly establish UN Day and educate future generations about the UN.”
Kim responded, “We will continue to listen to the voices of the elderly and ensure this is well carried out.”
At this meeting, he promised various senior welfare pledges, including ▲ abolishing the old age pension reduction system based on earned income ▲ gradually increasing the basic pension for vulnerable groups ▲ providing at least 500,000 won monthly for family caregivers and 1 million won for spouses over 65 ▲ expanding the usage time of dementia care services and nationwide expansion of dementia management physicians ▲ increasing support for nutrition expenses for senior centers ▲ and enhancing AI (artificial intelligence) education and distribution for seniors.
