The spouse of Kim Moon-soo, the People Power Party presidential candidate, Mrs. Seol Nan-young, plans to visit the Guro Industrial Complex in Seoul on the 15th to meet with female workers. This is seen as a move to emphasize her ties with Kim, who she met as a comrade in the labor movement, and to support her 'steps toward the vulnerable,' including youth, workers, and marginalized groups.
According to ChosunBiz on the 13th, Kim's camp is reviewing the schedule for Mrs. Seol to visit the Guro Industrial Complex this week to hold discussions with female workers.
Mrs. Seol served as the union chairperson at 'Sejin Electronics,' a component manufacturing company in the Guro Industrial Complex, in 1978. Through this discussion, Mrs. Seol plans to meet with young female workers in their 20s and 30s to listen to their difficulties, such as caregiving, and to present Kim's blueprint for enhancing labor rights.
In line with this, they are also considering a visit to a childcare center. A spokesperson for Kim's camp noted, "During Mrs. Seol's days in the labor movement, female workers had no places to leave their children," adding, "That's why she ran a childcare facility with her sister back then." They continued, "We are scheduling a visit to the daycare center to hear the concerns of young female workers regarding childcare and career management."
Mrs. Seol is also expected to visit her hometown of Suncheon around the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. A spokesperson for Kim's camp mentioned, "Since Kim is unable to visit religious facilities or support groups directly due to his circumstances, Mrs. Seol will visit those places instead," and added, "She is also planning discussions with female entrepreneurs."
Mrs. Kim Hye-kyung, spouse of Democratic Party of Korea candidate Lee Jae-myung, has also entered the underground competition with her 'quiet moves.'
Mrs. Kim met Mrs. Seol publicly for the first time on the 12th.
The two women attended the 70th anniversary ceremony of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism at the Seoul Shilla Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, as the spouses of presidential candidates. They also had a private conversation with the Secretary General of the Jogye Order and the head of the congregation.
It is reported that the two women mentioned their past connection at this event. They reportedly exchanged good wishes while recalling their relationship when candidate Lee and candidate Kim served as the mayors of Seongnam and Gyeonggi Province, respectively, from 2010 to 2014, where they met in a spouses' meeting.
However, unlike Mrs. Seol, who is making public external moves, Mrs. Kim is expected to continue her 'quiet moves.' On that day, she had a meeting with Cardinal Jeong Soon-taek, the archbishop of the Seoul Archdiocese, for about 30 minutes.
A spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea's campaign committee stated, "I understand that Mrs. Kim aims for restrained and non-public activities," adding, "Given that the election period is very short and that she intends to listen to various opinions, particularly from the religious community about national unity, she will limit her role to conveying them to candidate Lee."
