Kim Moon-soo, the People Power Party presidential candidate, and Han Duck-soo, an independent presidential preliminary candidate, met on the afternoon of the 7th at a restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, to begin discussions on unification. This meeting came four days after Kim Moon-soo was elected as the final presidential candidate of the People Power Party.
In a public remark, Han noted to Kim, "You have been in politics for a long time, so you must be very familiar with (the election)."
In response, Kim said, "How much hardship have you faced?"
This is Han's first challenge to elected office, coming from a bureaucratic background. Kim has previously served as a member of the National Assembly and the governor of Gyeonggi Province, and he also ran in the presidential election in 2012.
The meeting was arranged after Kim's camp suggested a meeting to Han the day before.
Late the previous night, Kim released a statement proposing that unnecessary debates regarding unification should no longer occur.
Right before the meeting, Han held an emergency press conference and stated, "If unification does not happen, I will not register as a candidate for the presidential election."
