Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, said on the 1st that the Supreme Court's ruling to overturn the lower court's guilty verdict against Lee Jae-myung, a leading presidential candidate from the Democratic Party of Korea, was "essentially a verdict of impeachment against Lee Jae-myung."
On the same evening, Kweon noted at a meeting of People Power Party lawmakers held at the National Assembly's main building that it was "a ruling that upheld the common sense of the people and the honor of the judiciary."
He said, "This case is not merely about lying; it is about covering up the largest real estate development fraud in Korean history, known as the Daejang-dong and Baekhyeon-dong incidents, and deceiving the people. The fact that this individual, a national con artist who deceived the public with a significant lie during the presidential election three years ago, is once again running for president shows a blatant disregard for the people."
He added, "The overturning of the guilty verdict indicates a guilty confirmation. This means Lee Jae-myung is guilty. He will no longer be a four-time offender but a five-time offender. It is only a matter of time before he will be disqualified from running for public office."
Kweon stated, "I hope the Democratic Party of Korea will immediately revoke its nomination of candidate Lee Jae-myung. That would be respectful to the people," and warned that "if candidate Lee pushes ahead with his candidacy, it will be a refusal to accept the Supreme Court ruling and a coup against the judicial order by a criminal."
Kwon Young-se, the emergency response committee chair of the People Power Party, who attended the meeting, stated, "I do not think we should be just pleased and applaud at this ruling. We should feel anger that it took over three years to reach such an obvious conclusion."
He continued, "Nevertheless, the Democratic Party is criticizing the judiciary for being unprecedentedly quick in its ruling and for intervening in the presidential election, claiming it is an elastic decision that undermines the legitimacy of the ruling. This is a serious insult to our people and the rule of law."
He informed lawmakers from the People Power Party, "Even if, by some chance, candidate Lee Jae-myung is elected, that election would soon be invalidated," and added, "As the presidential election is fast approaching, the more we should be cautious with our words and actions at this time."
