The Supreme Court on the 1st overturned the ruling from the lower court that acquitted Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate, for violating the Public Official Election Act, and sent the case back with a guilty verdict. Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Byung-ki said, "Just wait a month to see these things?"
Following the Supreme Court ruling, Kim posted on Facebook, questioning, "Does the judicial power disregard constitutional order and intend to seize legislative and administrative power?"
About 20 minutes later, Kim deleted the expression "Just wait to see these things?" from the original post. Approximately 45 minutes later, he added the phrase "But still, the president is Lee Jae-myung" at the end of the post.
Fellow party member Choi Min-hee remarked, "The Supreme Court's involvement in the presidential election! Judicial coup by Yoon Suk-yeol's friend Cho Hee-dae!" and urged, "Citizens, please protect Lee Jae-myung."
Lawmaker Jeong Cheong-rae stated, "The president is not elected by the Supreme Court. The president is elected by the people," condemning the court's attitude of being endlessly lenient in Yoon Suk-yeol's trial while being harsh in Lee Jae-myung's trial. He also said, "The Supreme Court has jumped into the midst of the election. This is anti-democratic judicial coup."
The Democratic Party of Korea has convened an emergency general meeting starting at 5 p.m. to discuss future measures.
