On the 1st, the National Assembly's Bill Review Committee introduced an impeachment motion against Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok.
The introduction of the impeachment motion against Deputy Prime Minister Choi was made unexpectedly that evening.
On the same day, the Democratic Party conducted an emergency general meeting as the Supreme Court's en banc panel issued a ruling that overturned the lower court’s decision regarding Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, on the charge of violating election laws.
During a brief recess in the afternoon's general meeting, a leadership strategy meeting was held, where it was reported that they converged on the opinion to re-pursue the impeachment motion against Deputy Prime Minister Choi.
Previously, the Democratic Party had claimed that Deputy Prime Minister Choi's failure to appoint candidate Ma Eun-hyeong as a Constitutional Court Justice during his acting presidential role was a clear violation of the constitution and urged that "the impeachment motion should be passed immediately without a legal committee investigation."
However, considering recent internal party opposition, they had decided not to pursue the impeachment motion.
Indeed, it was revealed that Democratic Party lawmakers on the legal affairs committee did not attend the general meeting at all.
